Great Basin College
Great Basin College is a member institution of the University and Community College System of Nevada and is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. For 35 years GBC has provided opportunities in higher education for central and northeast Nevadans. The College has also provided specialized training to local businesses and industries such as the mines, hospital, and education. GBC awards certificates of achievement, associate degrees, and select bachelor degrees using a variety of instructional methods. By advancing the academic and professional endeavors of the rural communities and by providing access to quality certificate, associate, and baccalaureate programs, GBC's mission of addressing workforce needs of the regional economy has been enhanced. Currently, the College offers bachelor degrees in elementary education, applied sciences, and integrative and professional studies.
Cultural Organizations and Recreation
Lander County is primarily an area for outdoor enthusiasts. There is fishing, golfing, swimming, hunting, and other outdoor activities.
Fishing
Small fishing streams are within a half hour drive from Battle Mountain provide brook and trout, but the best fishing is found in the southern part of the county. There is also great fishing in adjoining counties.
Hunting
Lander County boasts great deer populations. Upland game birds especially chukkar, sage hens, and quail are plentiful. There is also limited water fowl hunting available.
Carter's Monument
Located about seven miles northeast of Battle Mountain, and built in 1879 by a 60-year-old unemployed carpenter, this is a stone wall over a mile long at Stony Point. It was built as his personal memorial to the struggles of the California bound pioneers.
Pony Express 100 car race
This is an open road race between Battle Mountain and Austin which is held during the summer each year.
Mountain View Golf Course
One mile south of town on Highway 305. Enjoy 18 holes of challenging golf in the shadow of the Shoshone Mountain Range. Pro shop, bar and restaurant.
Mill Creek Canyon
Located about 19 miles south of Battle Mountain off of Highway 305, Mill Creek Canyon has a lot of history, and an improved camping area operated by the BLM, with fire pits, toilets, and tables. Just above the campground was the site of a Civilian Conservation Corps camp from the 1930s. It is rumored that bandits buried silver further up the canyon.
Lewis Canyon
Located about 6 miles southeast of town, off Jenkins Road, Lewis Canyon once had a thriving town, mines and a narrow gauge railroad that connected the mines with Battle Mountain and the Central Pacific Railroad. Here are old mill sites and relics of the past.
