Trucking
Western Nevada is located on two major highway corridors U.S. 395 and U.S. 50. Several local, regional and national carriers are used for shipment in and out of western Nevada to 80 percent of the 11-state western region on a next-day basis.
The major transportation route to Virginia City is State Route 341, intersecting U.S. 395 near Reno via Geiger Grade and U.S. 50, southwest in Carson City. Interstate 80 is located 23 miles northwest in Reno.
Two principal highways bisect Churchill County and link the region with major western markets. U.S. Highway 50 runs east-west to Reno and California, while U.S. Highway 95A runs north-south to northern Nevada. Interstate 80 is accessible at nearby Fernley, Nevada, or directly north via U.S. Highway 95A.
Reno/Sparks, located in Washoe County, is at the hub of an extensive transportation network on two major highway corridors: Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 395. Interstate 80 connects Reno/Sparks to Sacramento and San Francisco to the west and Salt Lake City to the east. U.S. Highway 395 runs northbound to Oregon, Washington, and Canada and southbound to Los Angeles. Both JC Penney and Kmart, two major distribution centers located in Reno and Sparks, carry shipments over these routes daily.
Three primary transportation routes transect Lyon County; Interstate 80 parallels the northwest border of the county, and continues west to San Francisco (via Reno/Sparks) and east to Salt Lake City. U.S. Highway 50 also crosses east-west through the county, continuing westbound through Carson City, and eastbound through Ely. U.S. Highway 95A spurs off I-80 and runs north-south, passing through Yerington on its way to Las Vegas. Several state routes provide access to the rural areas. Approximately sixty regional and national carriers are available for shipments in and out of Lyon County.
U.S. Highway 95 runs through the county linking the area with Reno to the north and Tonopah/Las Vegas to the south.

Foreign Trade Zones
Northern Nevada's Foreign Trade Zone at nearly 7,500 acres one of the largest in the nation.
A Foreign Trade Zone is designated by the United States Customs Department and allows foreign and domestic merchandise to be admitted for operations such as storage, exhibition, assembly, manufacture and processing, without being subject to formal Customs entry procedures, the payment of Customs duties or the payment of federal excise taxes.
With this vast size, the zone includes a variety of large-scale industrial and commercial parks, as well as smaller industrial properties, which makes the area more attractive to current and prospective businesses.
A Foreign Trade Zone is an area that may be a single building, an industrial park, an area of commercial/industrial development, or an existing company's production facility. There are two types of Foreign Trade Zone authority - "General-Purpose" and "Manufacturing" authority. Facilities made available for more than one company are considered general-purpose zones (FTZ-126/Sparks, Nv.). General Purpose zones provide authority for warehousing and distribution operations only. No manipulation or transformation of the product is allowed. Manufacturing authority allows for the manipulation or transformation of products within a zone operation. An individual firm seeking authorization for manufacturing operations - manipulation and/or transformation of goods - is normally designated as a Subzone site. The Foreign Trade Zones Board authorizes specific areas to be designated as FTZ space. It is then up to the local Customs officials to approve activation of space within the approved physical site.

Rail Service
Passenger service is provided by Amtrak in the Reno/Sparks area and freight service is provided by Union Pacific Railroad in Reno/Sparks. The Union Pacific Railroad provides spurline freight service to the center of Fallon. Burlington Northern Santa Fe has also been authorized to operate over the tracks in northern Nevada.
Bus Service
Regional service is provided by Greyhound. Citifare also offers commuter bus service, PRIDE, between Reno and Carson City. The Tahoe Basin portion of Douglas County is served on a contract basis. The Churchill Area Regional Transportation runs daily. Additionally, Trans Nevada Stages and K-T Services stop twice a day in Fallon and Hawthorne, Monday through Friday.
Airports
Reno Stead Airport is a general aviation airport located north of Reno. The physical facilities include two asphalt runways (7,600 ft. and 8,080 ft.) on 5,000 acres, lights, hangars and full services. Aviation Classics Limited is the fixed-based operator. In addition, the Nevada Army National Guard has an Aviation Support Facility at the airport, from which military training activities are conducted. Reno Stead Airport is home to the Reno National Championship Air Races every September.
Minden-Tahoe Airport
The Minden-Tahoe Airport is a 990-acre general aviation non-towered airport. Built in 1942 as a military training base, Douglas County acquired the Airport and has operated it as a municipal airport governed by Douglas County Board of County Commissioners. The Airport serves a broad base of aviation uses from corporate to recreational flying. It is home to approximately 250 aircraft with 80,000 annual operation. It is also home to the Minden Tanker Base and the Sierra Front Dispatch Agency with primary mission of dispatching tankers to fires in the Sierra Nevada region.
Carson City Airport
The Carson City Airport has one 5,900 ft. lighted runway, one 3,400 ft. unpaved taxiway and one 2,600 ft., 35-foot-wide paved taxiway. No commercial services exist. Fixed-based operators in operation are Silver Sky Aviation, Weaver Aircraft, Shadetree Aviation and El Aero Services.
Reno-Tahoe International Airport
Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RTIA) is located a short distance from the Carson City area. RTIA is the nation's 63rd busiest airport. Each day the airport handles approximately 17,000 arriving/departing passengers, 283,000 pounds of cargo arriving/departing and 420 aircraft operations. There are three runways, the main runway is 11,000 ft, the crosswind runway is 6,100 ft. and a parallel runway that is 9,000 ft. U.S. Customs and Immigration Offices are located on the airport premises. RTIA is a landing rights airport and Port of Entry. The Hawthorne Industrial Airport features a lighted 6,000 ft. runway.
An airpark with commercial and residential lots is planned for the Fernley Airport that is currently a 4,200-foot gravel strip.
Silver Springs Airport is located approximately 40 miles northeast of Carson City. This airport is a public facility serving the general aviation needs of northern Lyon County. The current gravel runway is 6,900 feet long and 150 feet wide. The potential for several on-airport, aviation related manufacturing operations are excellent.
The Yerington Municipal Airport is located approximately 70 miles southeast of Carson City. This airport also serves the general aviation needs of Lyon County. The airport has one runway 5,800 feet in length and 75 feet wide. There is also a 200-foot chevron on each end of the runway (total pavement is 6,200 foot) and a taxiway. The airport's an excellent facility for light- to medium-size business jets.
Fallon Municipal Airport provides charter and general aviation services to the area. Rental cars and flight instructions are also available. The runway lengths are 5,703 ft. paved and 3,650 ft. dirt.
