Know Your Meter Reader
Our Meter Readers provide a valuable service. Please help them work safely.
NV Energy employees read your meter each month. The date of your meter reading is listed on the right side of your monthly bill. In order to provide reliable service, it is sometimes necessary for our employees to visit your home on an unscheduled day.
Whenever our employees are in the field, they are there to provide a valuable service to you. Having actual meter readings means NV Energy doesn't have to estimate your usage, meaning your bills reflect your actual electric usage. But our meter readers do more than just read meters: they watch out for elderly customers, and for children too. We need your help to keep them safe as they go about their work. Locked gates and dogs are two of the problems meter readers encounter that, with your help, we can solve.
Dogs are unpredictable, and a dog who is gentle with friends and family has the natural instinct to 'protect' his home against a perceived 'intruder.' It's up to you, the homeowner and NV ENergy customer, to take the responsibility to restrain your dog when the meter reader arrives. Just check your bill for your next scheduled meter read date, and be ready to lock up Fido while the meter reader works.
Locked gates are another impediment. Again, being aware of the meter read date will allow you to unlock your gates long enough to give our employees access to your meter -- to which they are entitled by law. Please don't let trash or other household items impede access to your meter.
Our employees carry NV Energy identification that includes their photograph and employee number. They also wear shirts bearing the NV Energy logo, and carry folding umbrellas for protection against dogs (opening the umbrella momentarily confuses the dog and gives the meter reader time to escape). If you have any doubts about someone claiming to be a NV Energy employee, call us with the representative's employee identification number for verification.
If you ask for an identification badge and one is not produced, do not admit the individual. Call NV Energy and report the incident. Occasionally, customers report that persons claiming to be NV Energy employees attempt to gain access to customers' homes to obtain money for bill payments or inspection of house wiring or heating systems. Our field employees are not authorized to collect payments or inspect wiring and anyone who claims to be our employee and asks for money or access in the field is attempting fraud.
It's worth repeating -- NV Energy field employees are not authorized to receive payment. Only commercial office employees handling bill payments or employees at Authorized Payment Locations are authorized to accept money from customers.
