Recognizing Pipeline Leaks

Learn to Recognize the Telltale Signs of a Natural Gas Leak
Leaks from natural gas pipelines are very rare. However, it is important to know how to recognize them in case one occurs in your community. Here are some warning signs:
- A smell of rotten eggs.
- A hissing sound.
- Dirt being blown into the air.
- Continual bubbling in a pond, river, or creek.
- Plants that seem to be dead or dying for no reason.
What to Do
- Do not use fire or electricity. Even the tiniest spark from a cell phone, flashlight, or match could ignite the gas.
- Go far away from the area and do NOT go back until safety officials say it is safe.
- Ask a trusted adult to report the leak to 911 and the local gas utility.
