Celebrate National STEM Day with Education-Focused Nonprofits
November 8, 2021
November 8 is National STEM Day, a day to celebrate science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. The NV Energy Foundation supports nonprofits in Nevada through grants, and a few are doing fantastic work with a specific focus on STEM education.
Evirolution, Nevada
Envirolution is the only Nevada-based nonprofit focused solely on renewable and energy efficiency curriculum for middle and high school students. The hands-on Project ReCharge is helping teachers raise STEM career awareness with their students through interactive energy education focused on saving money through energy efficiency and sustainability proposals in their home, school and community.
Earlier this year, Envirolution was awarded a CLEAN grant of $96,000 from the Foundation to support the expansion of its renewable energy curriculum to rural northern Nevada communities.
Green Our Planet, Las Vegas
Green Our Planet teaches students to love and care for the planet through comprehensive STEM school garden and hydroponics programs. The nonprofit uses gardens as a portal for understanding by installing turnkey outdoor garden and indoor hydroponic systems at schools to be used as living laboratories. The program is in place at Nate Mack Elementary School, with garden lessons from farmers, STEM lessons, and virtual Chef Nutrition Lessons – the school year is filled with impactful learning experiences. Earlier this year, Green Our Planet was awarded a grant of $7,500 from the Foundation.
Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum, Reno
The Discovery has solidified its place in Reno as the home for informal science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) learning. Through hands-on galleries, exhibitions, and educational programs, The Discovery connects learners of all ages with opportunities to explore a wide variety of ever-changing topics, all designed to inspire curiosity and further investigation. Earlier this year, The Discovery was awarded a grant of $5,000 from the Foundation.
The Foundation is funded by NV Energy, not its customers and addresses critical diverse community needs in education and youth, environment and community enhancement, safety and wellness, and arts and culture.
