Rallying Together for Our Customers

Return to Major Projects

May 3, 2017

NV Energy serves a nearly 46,000-square-mile service territory that stretches north to south from Reno to Las Vegas and Elko to Laughlin. This includes remote, hard to serve areas. Yet this doesn’t stop NV Energy’s dedicated employees from making even the seemingly impossible project possible.

NV Energy learned about an issue with the transformer in the community of Battle Mountain, NV, and the diagnostics indicated that this piece of equipment needed major repairs. In most cases, NV Energy would send a crew to repair the transformer without any impact to the customers or the need for any major planning. But this was not an ordinary situation. The Battle Mountain transformer is the sole provider of power to the residents and businesses in the town. In order to do the required maintenance, the town would have to lose power. Staying true to NV Energy’s core values, the team committed to finding another way.

“As a lifelong employee, I continue to be impressed with the innovations our teams create and execute to provide reliability for our valued customers,” said Carol Roth Project Manager. “Their commitment to customer service is inspiring.”

NV Energy worked for months to develop and implement a solution that involved securing power through Beowawe Hot Springs Geothermal generation plant. With this power in place, the necessary maintenance to the transformer was successfully completed in a little less than a week, with no impact to customers.

To improve reliability in the future, NV Energy ordered and will install a second transformer. Once it is installed, the second transformer will be able to share the load, which will be especially helpful during the hot summer months.

This would not have been possible without the hard work of several NV Energy employees who developed and implemented the plan. This story is a testament to NV Energy’s commitment to customers.
